City no.43 — Venice is part of *City*, an ongoing series exploring how cities remain in memory rather than how they objectively appear. Venice is one of the series’ city-specific works, shaped by how the city remained after being experienced rather than by its recognizable landmarks. Acrylic, ink, graphite, typewritten fragments and stitching accumulate across the surface in the same way urban memory itself is formed: through fragments, overlaps, interruptions, chance encounters and traces left over time. The material layering of the work parallels the layering of the city, while the resulting image reflects not Venice as it objectively exists, but Venice as it was remembered and felt. The texts are from Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space. The work also marks an important stage in the development of the layered material language that later became central to the City series.
